Borussia Dortmund have officially announced that defender Nico Schlotterbeck has signed a contract extension, with the new deal running until 2031. German outlet Bild has revealed details regarding the release clause included in his contract.

According to the report, Schlotterbeck’s new contract contains a release clause valued between €50 million and €60 million. This clause will come into effect starting this summer, but it applies only to a select number of clubs.

Schlotterbeck’s preferred destinations are Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, making it highly likely that the clause is specifically tailored for these two sides. As things stand, Bayern are unlikely to make a move for him, especially after extending the contract of Dayot Upamecano.

In addition, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl is reportedly not fully convinced by Schlotterbeck’s abilities. The defender had been waiting for a concrete offer from a top club, but none materialised, which ultimately led him to renew with Dortmund while securing a release clause that leaves the door open for a future move.
